NO641404
Built 1813. Beige-coloured house and tower with castellated top;
  including the mast, about 20m high.
  Not intended as a lighthouse, but worth its place in Michael's List for its history; it was built as a stores depot and signal station for communication with the Bell Rock light, 11 miles out to sea. The simple messages "All right" or "Help" were indicated by a ball raised or lowered on the lighthouse, and the corresponding ball on the signal tower was raised or lowered in sympathy. Now a lighthouse museum, containing a splendid model of the Bell Rock light. image

Often said to be on the most easterly point of the Scottish mainland, but this is incorrect on two counts: first it is on a small island connected by a bridge; and second it stands about 500 yards west of the extremity of Keith Inch, a peninsula which forms the northern arm of Peterhead harbour. Until March 2013, however, it was one of the two brightest lights in the British Isles -- with a nominal range of 28 miles, dazzling from the north side of Peterhead harbour and casting shadows from five miles away at sea

   By the end of 2010 the leading lights had been rebuilt and their characters had been changed. They are now supported on four-square lattice masts (which were previously three-legged). The front mast has been moved off the beach on to the top of the harbour wall, but the total movement has been only a few feet. The lights are now vertical strip lights showing an occulting light, the old tube-lights showing fixed lights having been abandoned.
   Images of both lights, separately and together, are shown on this special page.

  Construction of new wharves is proceeding at Peterhead. A westerly extension of the Merchants Quay has been constructed and named Smith's Quay. It is marked by a new light, which takes the reference M044-10; the existing light on Merchants Quay is now called M044-11. The Albert Quay (marked by M045-01) has been extended and the light has been replaced.
